Sports massage is treatment given with the understanding not only of anatomy and physiology but also of the particular demands placed upon the body by the client and their specific sport.

Sports massage focuses on preventing and treating injury while also enhancing athletic performance. Therapists will commonly use a mixture of Swedish and deep tissue massage techniques. Your massage therapist will usually finish your sports massage with some gentle stretch therapy.

A sports massage’s principal mandate is the returning of you to your desired sports activity with the same or an even better level of function. Sports massages can include more aggressive techniques that approach muscles more deeply.

Swedish massage

Yoga relax massage techniques include: long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration and shaking motions. Swedish massage is primarily a relaxation style massage that can be enjoyed by all ages. Swedish massage is probably the best-known form of relaxation massage.

The usual sequence of techniques are: Gliding strokes with the palms, thumbs and/or fingertips.

Distress Massage

Distress massage is a smooth, gentle, flowing style that promotes general relaxation, relieves muscular tension, plus improves circulation and range of movement.

This is the style of massage you’ll find performed at day spas. Yoga therapist will aim to relax, revive and rejuvenate you at a massage depth that does not cause discomfort.

 

While relaxation massage is wonderful for you, it is less effective than the deeper styles for changing soft tissue tension. We normally recommend deeper styles when you are suffering pain and leave relaxation for when you just want to … relax!

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. It is kind of strong massage .

Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as lighter styles, e.g. Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots. Deep tissue massage is excellent for chronic tightness, scar formation, repetitive strain or regular high-intensity exercisers.

A quality deep-tissue massage helps to:

  • loosen muscle tissues,

  • release toxins from muscles, and

  • get blood and oxygen circulating properly

Yoga Healing Massage

Yoga healing massage is a form of Trigger Point Therapy in which direct pressure is applied to specified points on tender muscle tissue to bring about a reduction in muscle tension and pain relief.

What Activates Yoga healing massage?

Each muscle has potential trigger points which can become activated by muscle overuse, inflammation, trauma, electrolyte imbalances, infections and nerve pain.

These trigger points can cause pain over the muscle affected or refer pain and thus be felt in another area of the body. Other trigger points are only felt when the muscle is directly palpated by the Yoga therapist.
